Supporting a child with autism is a journey of learning, patience, and celebration. While every child on the spectrum is unique, there are some tried-and-tested strategies that many families find helpful in everyday life.
1. Build Predictable Routines
Children with autism often thrive on routine and predictability. When they know what's coming next, anxiety decreases and they can engage more fully with each activity.
- Use a visual timetable (pictures or symbols) for the daily routine
- Give advance warnings before transitions: "In five minutes, we're going to tidy up"
- Keep consistent routines for meals, bath time, and bedtime
2. Use Clear, Simple Language
Processing spoken language can be challenging. Keep instructions short and direct:
- Instead of "Can you go and put your shoes on because we're leaving soon?", try "Shoes on, please"
- Use your child's name first to get their attention
- Allow processing time — wait 10 seconds before repeating
- Support speech with visuals, gestures, or signs where helpful
3. Create Sensory-Friendly Spaces
Many children with autism have sensory processing differences. A few adjustments at home can make a big difference:
- Reduce background noise (turn off the TV when not watching)
- Offer noise-cancelling headphones for overwhelming environments
- Provide fidget tools, weighted blankets, or chewable jewellery
- Create a designated calm-down space with soft furnishings
4. Focus on Strengths and Interests
Children with autism often have passionate interests. These aren't distractions — they're gateways to learning and connection. Use their interests to motivate, reward, and teach. A child who loves trains can learn counting, geography, and social skills through their favourite topic.
5. Look After Yourself
Parenting a child with additional needs is rewarding but demanding. Connect with other families who understand, accept offers of help, and take time for yourself when you can. Your wellbeing matters too.
At Every Sensation, we work alongside families to develop strategies that work in real life — not just in theory. If you'd like support, we're here to help.
